4 Ways to practice yoga more responsibly (with reverence and mindfulness)

Here are four ways to practice yoga more responsibly with reverence and mindfulness.

1. Acknowledge the roots of yoga and where it comes from: originating from the Indian subcontinent 2500+ years back. Take time to understand the origins and history of these traditions and practices.

Having that understanding of the roots makes a big difference. Use practices and rituals backed by an understanding of their sacredness and value - not simply for decor, aesthetics, or to play the part.

2. Understand the true goals of being on this path. Yoga is first and foremost a spiritual practice with a well-defined goal of liberation (moksha) and self- and mind-transformation. Yoga is a process and a complete path that happens over time, even lifetime(s).

We practice with devotion and discipline so that gradually the Truth is revealed about who we actually are, we reach liberation and the cessation of suffering.

3. Practice beyond asana. Understand, practice, and teach yoga as a method of spiritual development and not simply a form of exercise. This physical practice is one aspect and just the tip of the iceberg of yoga.

If you want to teach or practice only asana, then call it asana. This is satya in action. Even asana is a tool for going deeper within to the subtle levels and is not meant to be JUST a superficial practice for becoming more flexible or building a cute yoga butt.

4. Be patient with yourself. We are going to make mistakes, face confusion, reckon with avidya (ignorance), and be triggered. Yoga is about self-inquiry. Acceptance of our ignorance is knowledge - we cannot transform in a state of denial. Be gentle and empathetic with yourself.

This is a path that might take lifetime(s) so there is no need to rush. Yoga was never meant to be just a 60-minute class we check off as done.

When did we turn this sacred practice into something to commodify and consume?

Which one of these tips are you going to incorporate or are already mindfully practicing? Please share this with a sincere practitioner, student, or yoga teacher who would appreciate this knowledge!
